Radical Recommenders

What does it mean for a news recommendation to be truly diverse? And how can an algorithm make a meaningful news selection that is in line with a media company’s mission, out of enormous amounts of data?

In this project, we specifically focus on one type of democratic mission, namely on critical or agonistic theory. We argue why this approach towards media diversity is currently overlooked, and why it should receive more attention compared to ‘traditional’ approaches such as deliberative theory. Furthermore, our goal is to take the next step and to include its values in recommender system evaluation and eventually design.
